NIGHTHAWKS AT THE DINER

1975년 발매된 Tom Waits의 세번째 정규앨범입니다. 이 앨범은 자신의 친구들을 스튜디오로 불러 녹음을 한 특이한 형식의 앨범입니다. 전체적으로 Jazzy한 곡들이 주류를 이루고 있고(악기 구성: Piano, Upright Bass, Tenor Sax, Drum), 늦은 저녁의 술집을 연상케 하는 Cover에서도 알 수 있듯이 왁자한, 혹은 쓸쓸한 술집 풍경과 늦은 거리의 모습을 이야기하는 곡들이 많습니다. 이 앨범의 제목 'Nigthawks In The Dinner'의 'Nigthawks'는 아메리칸 리얼리즘 화가 Edward Hopper의 작품이기도 합니다. 아래는 Tom Waits supplement v2의 관련글입니다.

From Easton's 1897 Bible Dictionary (easton):
Night-hawk (Heb. tahmas) occurs only in the list of unclean birds (Lev. 11:16; Deut. 14:15). This was supposed to be the night-jar (Caprimulgus), allied to the swifts. The Hebrew word is derived from a root meaning "to scratch or tear the face," and may be best rendered, in accordance with the ancient versions, "an owl" (Strix flammea). The Revised Version renders "night-hawk."

탐 웨이츠는 앨범의 제목과 에드워드 호퍼Edward Hopper의 그림 "Nighthaws"에 착상한 앨범 커버에 대해서는 언급하지 않았다.

사실 NIghthaws는 새다. 하지만 기대했던 것보다는 크지 않은.. 참새만한 새다.

Common nighthawk (Chordeiles minor ) Identification Tips:
부리는 매우 짧다. 회색과 흰색을 띠어 거무스름하고 머리와 가슴은 갈색과 흰색 계열을 띄며 아랫부분은 검은 색 줄무늬가 있다 날개를 구부리면 그 중간 부분에 희끄무레한 반점이 있다. 꼬리는 어두운 색 바탕에 하얀 줄무늬가 있다.
일반적으로 Nigthaws는 도시의 시가지나 옥상 또는 시골의 여름밤에 나는 모습을 쉽게 볼 수 있다. 날벌레를 잡기 위해 급하강할 때 날개에서는 공명음의 소리가 난다. 모기나 날벌레를 주로 잡아 먹는다. 억센 털로 둘러 쌓인 큰입은 공중에서 사냥하기에 매우 적합하게 되어 있다. 또한 이 새는 둥지를 틀지 않는다. 대신에 도시 안이나. 평평하게 자갈이 깔린 옥상을 찾아 알을 낳는다.
